Aside from Valentine’s Day, Chinese New Year is one of the most important holidays in February, and labels all over the world have been gearing up with special releases to celebrate, commemorate and cash-in on the holidays. And as previously reported, Nike has been staying culturally relevant to one of its largest markets–China–with special edition Chinese New Year celebration models, and this year the label has reworked the classic Cortez to mark the beginning of the year of the tiger.
The classic Cortez draws inspiration from the rare white Bengal tiger, and has remixed the Cortez into a white tonal number mixing pony hair on the Swoosh, heel and toe panels, with matching white nylon and golden hue silk, screened tiger stripe print on the rest of the shoe. Aside from the tiger print, other relevant Chinese New Year details also come into play such as Chinese characters “?” and “??” (meaning Tiger and Peace respectively). Of course, Stark Laces top off the Cortez on a felicific note.
For those who have been waiting to pounce on these with the ferocity of the tiger, the special year of the tiger Cortez will be available at INVINCIBLE WEST this coming Saturday, right on the eve of Chinese New Year at 2PM. If there is any great Chinese New Year tradition to live up to, buying new kicks to start the new year off with the right stride would be a pretty good one (and a wonderful excuse to buy new shoes).
