PUMA Urban Mobility by Hussein Chalayan – Motus Sneaker

Urbanites today may not have to trek miles on end just to get from one place to another, but it doesn’t mean they travel and roam the concrete jungle with any less baggage. To facilitate mobility and ease of commuting through the city, Puma’s Urban Mobility collection aims to fuse technology, function and fashion into one single collection that will serve urban wanderers well. Since Puma is no stranger to high-fashion collaborations (having worked with Alexander McQueen and Sergio Rossi), the Urban Mobility collection is directed by none other than Puma’s very own Creative Director, Hussein Chalayan who has been at the helm since 2008.

Chalayan is one of those designer with a fearless, experimental vision and does not compromise on luxurious sophistication. The St. Martin’s College of Art and Design graduate pushes fashion boundaries with innovative cuts and materials (his breakout show was a graduate collection consisting of decomposed silk dresses he buried and later exhumed for the show).

For his Urban Mobility Spring/Summer Collection, one of the fresh sneaker models that had been garnering a lot of attention is Chalayan’s re-imagined chukkah-inspired Motus sneaker. The Motus sneaker is crafted from intriguing inverted leather upper and extremely unadorned, championing a minimal, deconstructed look reminiscent of Scandinavian and Japanese design. Unlike other Puma sneaker one might be used to, the iconic racing stripe along the side is printed on as opposed to sewn on, giving the shoes a sleeker, flat, 2D look. Sitting atop white rubber soles, these vaporous grey sneakers look almost surgically clean and debunk the preconceptions of chukka being outdoorsy and rugged.

PUMA x Lot78 x Sadia Rafique – Limited Edition PUMA 4 LOT78 Vs Sadia

Even though two rivaling brothers founded PUMA and adidas respectively, the sportswear giant labels do share the same impeccable taste for pitch perfect collaborations. Adidas has been winning crowds over with the Originals by Originals line, enlisting the help of some of the most creative minds in the industry such as Jeremy Scott, Kazuki Kuraishi and James Bond of UNDFTD; meanwhile, PUMA has executed some of the most coveted line-ups with luxurious flair with Sergio Rossi and Alexander McQueen.

PUMA perpetuates its good taste in collaborators this season by teaming up with fashion label LOT78 and graphic designer Sadia Rafique. For the unfamiliar, LOT78 was relaunched in 2008 and is designed and run by Ollie Amhurst. Amhurst’s portfolio extends to 10 years with Giorgio Armani and his label expands on the concept of contemporary luxury with a series of tailored leather and jersey pieces that are individualistic and timeless.

Meanwhile, Sadia Rafique is a veteran of Central Saint Martins and has worked in both mens and womenswear design. She has worked with labels such as Levi’s, Lee Jeans, Evisu and retailer oki-ni. Aside from fashion labels, Sadia has been working with PUMA AG under the direction of Hussein Chalayan since 2008 and is well-versed in PUMA’s sleek contemporary sportswear aesthetics.

The collaboration with LOT78 and Sadia works on the First Round high top and are crafted from leather and suede in a sophisticated black and white colorway. The heel and collar runs touches of spring happy pink with graphic elements that have a deep painterly touch in free but meticulous ink sketches.

These collaborative First Round Hi-Tops come in a limited run of 400 and will be available around the globe starting March 27. Check out the kicks and do stay tuned for the release if you are feeling a little artistic in your steps.

PUMA – 917 Mid Manga

While PUMA’s collaborations with Sergio Rossi and Alexander McQueen proved that the label has upscale luxury on its mind, the label 917 Mid Manga proved that it can go on the other side of the spectrum. Taking on the silhouette of the label’s 917 Mid, these sneakers get a Japanese touch with details drawn and sewn own. Also, take note of the animated details such as the reflective bubble on the toe cap, dotted shadow and sketchy shading. If a manga artist was to draw the 917 Mid in his work and that resulting pictures is promptly realized in the real world with three dimensions, this would be the end product. Hussein Chalayan X PUMA – Spring/Summer 2010 Collection | Preview

Fearlessly experimental yet utterly sophisticated, Hussein Chalayan is one of the few designers who are constantly challenging concepts of fashion by pushing the envelope and design boundaries with innovative cuts and use of material. The St. Martin’s College of Art and Design graduate and Member of The Order to The British Empire came into the cut throat fashion scene in 1993 with a stunning graduate collection consisting of decomposed silk dresses which he buried and later exhumed for show.

With a penchant and experience for collaborating with high fashion designers such as Sergio Rossi and Alexander McQueen, PUMA sought out Hussein Chalayan to create sneakers for Spring/Summer 2010. Using a mix of materials and meticulous patterning that are iconic of Chalayan’s eponymous apparel collection, the sneakers retains simplicity in a monochromatic shades of grey while developing complexity in form. So far, the preview shows a Chukkah inspired sneaker and another more futuristic hi-top adorned with overlapping straps and panels. Other than sneakers, a printed tee featuring futuristic cosmic prints that are reminiscent of the designer’s Spring/Summer 2009 and Fall/Winter 2009 collections is also previewed along with the collection. Sergio Rossi x PUMA Clyde

Italian footwear brand Sergio Rossi first presented their collaboration with PUMA several months ago and are now showcasing the whole collection of sneakers. The Clyde is the canvas of this sophisticated project which includes four different color scheme each consisting of a satin upper and finished off with the brand’s logo at the side. Sergio Rossi is most known for their high-end womens models, but incorporate a versatile palette of colors including silver, black, purple and lavender. Now available at colette priced at approximately $192 USD.

A revisionist’s version of a classic, Italian footwear designer Sergio Rossi’s PUMA Clyde feature a stain upper flaunt in brightly colored hues. Also with the inclusion of high heels, though maybe a typo, appropriately named “Sneaker with Hell” and “High Hell Sneaker” . All are now available exclusively through Parisian boutique Colette. In addition, be on the lookout of a limited edition in the classic Colette blue.
